Russia's Borodin Quartet commands a special position of respect in the chamber music world. In existence for more than 60 years, it has preserved a unique performance tradition, focusing on the masterpieces at the very heart of the quartet repertoire. Its interpretations are celebrated for their intensity and focus, a style in which individualism dedicates itself to the collaborative spirit of chamber music and total service of the composer's wishes.
The Borodin Quartet's particular affinity with Russian repertoire was stimulated by a close relationship with Shostakovich, who personally supervised its study of each of his quartets.
This programme features two of the most deeply felt works in the repertoire: Borodin's melodic second quartet featuring the famous nocturne; and Shostakovich's gruelling eighth quartet, with its references to the futile destruction caused by war. The gorgeous slow movement of Tchaikovsky's first string quartet apparently caused the writer Tolstoy to "dissolve into tears".

On this tour the Borodins are offering two programmes that, apart from a Brahms quartet, is entirely Russian music. This programme was all Russian, and a safer, more predictable, balance of works would be difficult to imagine.

What a treat was enjoyed by the audience. This string quartet, described over its 65 year history by endless superlatives, and as having a particular affinity with Russian music, certainly lived up to its reputation.
