Watch out for writing where you least expect it. On Monday 8 March, look out for six playwrights and one scriptwriter racing around Wellington in search of a story. They could be sitting at a bus stop, riding an elevator, or watching animals at the zoo. Each will be armed with a laptop, wireless internet, and a minder to make sure they stick to the rules and keep to the clock. At the start of the day, each writer is given a route to follow and will spend one hour at each location, including a turn in the writer's cage. When time's up, every writer meets with an editor to help them polish up their 1,200 word story, and then it's off to the Wellington Town Hall for the Read-Off, and to decide the winner.
The 2010 marathon sees the return of David Geary, the 2008 champion back to defend his title. Other contenders include Pip Hall, the 2009 Bruce Mason Playwriting Award-winner; Eli Kent, the writer behind the 2009 Best Theatre win in the NZ Fringe Festival; Miria George, the award-winning playwright and He Reo Aroha co-writer, internationally acclaimed playwright Dianna Fuemana; Spooks scriptwriter Neil Cross; and emerging playwright Lucy O'Brien. Stay tuned to the website for the various locations you'll be able to spot our writers as they race against the clock. Be at the Wellington Town Hall at 6.30pm for the Read-Off to hear the writers read their stories and then help decide the winner with judges....
